The music playing on this page is 'Swipesy', which was composed by Scott Joplin and his young friend and student, Arthur Marshall. It is a fairly long piece (nearly 5 minutes) and is generally accepted to be the first true slow rag. It was originally published by John Stark & Son, St Louis, in 1900, and a piano roll was also made.
